Workshop on National Risk Assessment in Dominican Republic

Mr. Roberto Aleu - World Bank Consultant; Mrs. Dulce Luciano - Director of the Financial Analysis Unit; Doctor Fidias Aristy - Chairman of the National Drug Council; Mrs. Ana Folgar - World Bank Consultant; Mrs. Alejandra Quevedo - World Bank Consultant; Mrs. Emily Reinhart - World BankThe World Bank, with the support of the Financial Analysis Unit of the National Committee against Money Laundering and the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF), conducted the Workshop on National Risk Assessment from May 14 - 16, 2014 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The workshop was a successful event, bringing together a multidisciplinary group of more than 80 high level participants, who will have the responsibility for leading the National Risk Assessment in Dominican Republic. This group is composed of representatives from the Supreme Court, Attorney General, Ministry of Interior, Police, Central Bank, Superintendency of Banks, Superintendent of Securities, Insurance Supervisor, Directorate General of Internal Revenue, National Committee against Money Laundering, Association of Commercial Banks, Rural Savings and Credit Institutions and Banks of the financial system.

For three days the participants were familiarized with the fundamental concepts of the national risk assessment and risk-based and fully engaged in enriching brainstorming, exchange of views and deep analysis of the risks and vulnerabilities facing the Dominican Republic. Also the need for data collection was identified, showing a lot of cooperation for the development and integration of the Workshop on the approach of measures to be implemented in the near future.

The Workshop was opened by Dr. Fidias Aristy, Chairman of the National Drug Council, Dulce Maria Luciano, Director of the Financial Analysis Unit and Mcdonald Benjamin and Emily Reinhart of the World Bank. Also present were distinguished officials of the National Committee against Money Laundering: Victor Amaury Romero of the Superintendency of Banks, German Miranda Villalona, Money Laundering Prosecutor of the Public Ministry and Colonel Luis Soulfront Tamayo, of the National Drug Control (DNCD).

GAFIC congratulates the National Committee against Money Laundering and Financial Analysis Unit for the implementation of the National Risk Assessment, hoping that this experience will strengthen inter-agency cooperation and transparency and combating money laundering and terrorist financing in the Dominican Republic.
